Who are we ?
The Communauté Angkorienne du Canada
(CAC) is a non-profit organisation. The CAC is
setting up a new project to assist development
aid in Cambodia. It helps to promote reading
in this country by developing the ability of
young Cambodians to be more educated and
cultured, and by promoting the expansion of
young authors and supporting the publication
of new books in the Khmer language. The
project team of “Contribution à la lecture of
Cambodge” is composed of Cambodian and
French volunteers. |
The project (Genesis)
Education levels in Cambodian society are
alarming: there is, in particular, a high rate of
illiteracy (60% of the population). It is
necessary to bear in mind that the majority of
the intellectuals died under the Pol Pot regime,
from 1975 to 1979. Several generations are
needed to reconstruct a country after such
devastation; it takes an especially long time to
rebuild a cultured elite. It seems important to
turn to youth to initiate change. The
publication of books of a pedagogical nature
that transmit strong messages appears to us as
a way to help Cambodia improve its situation
and to experience a more promising future.
Publishing books will give children a taste for
reading. Books will also allow them to gain
knowledge, to dream, to enlarge their horizons
and to develop their imagination. Within the
democratization process in Cambodia, being
able to read is a major asset as it provides
access to information.

The books
A portion of the volumes published by CLC
will be distributed freely. Another portion
will be sold at a reduced price. We would like
those books to be accessible to as many people
as possible. |
